Protecting Casino Workers: Hearing on Casino Smoking Ban Bill
Workers demand a non-smoking working environment to protect their health.
Kansas lawmakers will be hearing on a bipartisan House Bill 2622 that could amend the State’s Clean Indoor Act to include smoking inside casinos. KWCH reports that Kansas is one of eleven states that allow smoking inside casinos, and the workers would like to change that.
Joe Hafley, founder and CVEO of CEASE Kansas (Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects), has been working for over a year to put this bill into law to protect casino workers from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.
“We don’t have to deal with people at the door smoking,” Joe Hafley said. “And when I ID people, I get their ID. They blow smoke in my face because they didn’t like it.”
The smoking ban would affect all four Kansas Casinos (Kansas Star, Boot Hill, Kansas Crossing Casino + Hotel, and Hollywood Casino at Kansas Crossway).
