My College Degree Isn’t Worth It — I’m Considering Quitting And Focusing On My Craft
Two years ago, I enrolled in college and majored in paralegal studies. About one year in, I decided it wasn’t something I was interested in, so I changed to journalism. I always wanted a journalism degree, so I was thrilled with the prospect of becoming a bonafide journalist.
I interviewed for a writing job with Fox News. I know, I know, they aren’t the best source of information. But they claimed they paid between 50–70K a year. They wanted me to write crime, which is a passion of mine.
After the interview, they sent me an offer. They offered $2,740 per month. That sounds good on paper, but they required writing seven articles daily, six days a week. It ended up being less than 16 bucks per article. That isn’t something I was willing to do, so I declined.
After that low-ball offer, I researched the market. College graduates with a bachelor’s degree in writing only make an average of 40K annually. By the time I graduate, I will have 60K in debt. If I made 40K a year, it would take me years to repay my school loans. If I can find a job as the market suggests, traditional writing jobs will decline 10% by 2028.
