Mother Fakes Daughter’s Cancer in Twisted Charity Scam

Pamela Reed, 41, has been charged with theft by deception after lying about her 7-year-old daughter’s cancer battle. People reported that Reed told her community in Caldwell, Ohio, that her daughter was fighting cancer and she needed donations to pay her medical bills.

Noble County Sheriff’s Office stated on Facebook, “After obtaining information, Sheriff Mackie, along with Detectives and Children Services, began an investigation into the allegation; they were able to confirm that the child did not have cancer. They also confirmed that one local organization had donated approximately $8,000.00 to the family to aid in the cancer treatment expenses.”

Law enforcement arrested Reed and charged her with theft by deception, a felony of the fourth degree. Detectives interviewed Reed, and she admitted that she had “exaggerated and fabricated medical conditions to receive monetary donations from local organizations.”
