James Washington Thought He Was At The End And Confessed To Murder — But He Survived
It didn’t go according to plan. Washington wanted to clear his conscience but ended up paying for another crime.
In 2009, Nashville prison inmate James Washington experienced a severe heart attack (though some sources suggest it was a seizure), which led him to make a startling confession about the 1995 killing of Joyce Goodener.
Washington, who was serving time for a 2006 second-degree murder conviction, believed he was facing his final moments.
Whether seeking spiritual redemption or acting out of sheer desperation, Washington revealed to a prison guard that he was responsible for Goodener’s death. This brutal homicide had remained unsolved in Nashville, Tennessee, for nearly two decades.
After recovering from his medical emergency, Washington attempted to retract his confession, claiming he had been experiencing hallucinations.
During the subsequent trial, evidence emerged revealing that Washington and Goodener had been romantically involved.
Following three days of court proceedings, the jury found Washington guilty, resulting in a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
