Is It Safe To Stand In Front Of A Microwave?
FDA clarifies its stance on the safety of microwaves.
We’ve all heard the advice about microwaves. People say standing in front of the microwave is unsafe when cooking. Several years ago, there was a post on social media claiming that if a pregnant woman stood in front of a microwave while it was on, it could “cook” her baby from the inside.
It was a ridiculous claim and completely false. However, it prompted researchers to chime in and settle the debate about how safe it is to stand in front of the microwave.
Yahoo News reports that microwaves omit “electromagnetic radiation,” but this radiation is confined to the microwave and cannot be transmitted if you are standing close to the appliance. Microwaves are built to seal the waves and automatically shut off when the door opens, which prevents exposure. Dr. Arya Amini, associate professor and chief of thoracic radiotherapy at the City of Hope National Medical Center, said that electromagnetic waves are non-ionizing and do not cause radioactivity in food and those exposed to them by standing close.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said, “Microwave oven manufacturers are required to certify their products and meet safety performance standards created and enforced by the FDA to protect public health…
