Susan Smith is serving a life sentence for killing her two children, Michael, 3, and Alex, 14 months old, in 1994. Still, she hopes the parole board will grant her an early release in November 2024. Smith made headlines when she put her sons in their car seats and rolled her vehicle into the lake. She claimed she was considering suicide and planned to jump into the car with them.

“I had planned to kill myself first and leave a note behind telling what had happened,” Smith said, according to Daily Mail. ‘“ I didn’t believe I could face my family when the truth was revealed.”

Smith’s initial story to the police was a black man hijacked her car. She described the men and helped create a sketch of the offender. But the police doubted her story. Eventually, they learned the truth and charged her with her son’s murders.

Susan was having an affair with a man, Thomas Findley, who said he didn’t want children. She thought that if her kids were out of the picture, the man would want a life with her.
