The University of Colorado Boulder has published an updated guide for the students. Fox News reports that the university added a section to the guide on pronouns, stating students should assume their classmates are transgender or non-binary and use gender-neutral pronouns until they know the student’s preferred pronoun.

The guide suggests using the pronoun ze/zi, which is a gender-neutral pronoun and will “generally not upset others” and “remove the risk of misgendering.”

“If someone tells you their pronouns, use those! If you don’t know someone’s pronouns, don’t assume gendered pronouns and use gender-neutral ones, like they or ze,” the guide reads. “Sometimes people just don’t want to share their pronouns, and that’s fine. Usually, it’s safe to use they/them/theirs unless that person tells you otherwise.”
