There are an estimated 20 quadrillion ants all over the world. The only continent you won’t see a single ant on is Antarctica. A close-up of an ant’s face is making rounds on social media. The images look like a cartoon or horror movie, but the photographer, Eugenijus Kavaliauskas, swears it’s the real deal and genuine pictures of the carpenter ant.

According to The Washington Post, the photo was an entry into the distinction in Nikon’s 2022 Small World Photomicrography Competition. But the reaction from Twitter sent this photo to viral status.

Social Media Users Couldn’t Look Away

Social media users couldn’t get over the image. They dubbed it “The stuff nightmares are made of.”

“Image from a horror movie? Nope. That’s the very real face of an ant. An ant. Now you have to think about that all night,” Rebekah McKendry. Ph.D. tweeted.
